Mastering the SCIENCE of Marketing: Skill, Finesse, and Continuous Learning

If you've got a passion for storytelling and painting pretty pictures that leads to a behaviour change then marketing is for you. Because marketing is about influencing and changing behaviours so that someone will decide they want to buy your brand or they want to fly on your aeroplane or they want to be part of your architecture practice. So the influencer, as much as it is a very new-ish thing, it’s not new to marketing. It’s just got a new title.

Marketers have been influencers since the day marketing was born.

Marie Grieve, Founder and Managing Director of Costello Palmer Communications.

I loved my discussion with Marie and I know you will too.

KEY Take-AWAYS from this episode

  • People can make their own job titles and roles. You don't have to be a Marketing Manager or a Marketing Director. You don't have to be an administrator. You can become a Chief Strategic Innovator or a Storyteller - with or without a Marketing degree. Be creative.

  • The science and principles of marketing haven't changed. The delivery and the mechanisms by which we reach people have changed. Marketing is about defining your audience, understanding what their needs are and marketing your product or service to them, emphasising how it’s going to change their lives or why they need it in their lives.

  • Like in any profession, there's a level of unskilled people within that career path matched against the people who are highly skilled. There’s a skill to marketing, a finesse to it. You have to understand the science behind it, do your research, homework and the training (university or apprenticeships) to understand how it works.

  • Find a mentor you can learn from and who can encourage you to push your limits a little bit.

  • You don’t only get one chance. Keep trying. If one (business or marketing) idea fails, try something else. Don’t sit in a job you don’t like.

FUN FACT ABOUT MARIE

Marie’s first job after leaving University was as a mystery shopper driving around the UK :) This job got her into the research side of marketing and she has fond and fun memories from this (very cool) first job.
