About Language, AI and Human Connection

When Eloise described herself as a student and disciple of Linguistics, I immediately knew I struck gold with this delightful podcast guest. The use of language is a crucial aspect of Marketing, a key that unlocks several paths to our customers’ heart and we all need to understand this aspect better. This discussion was an absolute pleasure and I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.

We need to focus on what our customers need from us - and how they are describing that and then mirror it in our external comms. Because your customers are then going to be so much more able to recognise their need in your copy and feel understood and important to you. It makes them more likely to engage.

The things that make words worth reading are empathy, imagination, creativity, human relationships … AI is just a very, very comprehensive answering machine. Quality will trump quantity - always.”

Eloise Leeson-Smith, Corporate Linguist, Speaker, Podcaster and Founder of Olim Communications

about ELOISE

As a trained linguist (MA-Hons, University of Aberdeen), Eloise helps companies close the gap between what they think they're saying, and what's actually being received by their customers. Since founding Olim Communications, Eloise has worked with clients such as the UN, the RSA, the Scottish Government and Capgemini America Inc.

KEY Take-AWAYS from this episode

  • Setting people up for communication success in a business context. Many of Eloise’s clients have created guides spelling out how and when different communication channels should be used by their employees (are out of hours emails in order, calls vs. lengthy email chains, Slack for brainstorming? maybe not).

  • Jargon - as a socially charged communication barrier. “Could you explain that five letter acronym to me?” Fostering an environment where people can ask those questions is really important and is a part of explicitly thinking and improving corporate communications.

  • Human connection is endless and rich however we tend to either devalue or deprioritise it at work. Why? Because when there is an abundance of something it's very easy to fall into the trap of assuming it's always going to be there.

  • The very best businesses and the very best business people realise that there's so much beyond that transaction. You shouldn’t even begin to consider having a transaction unless you have a human interaction at the heart of it.
