COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

a short story

It’s 2011 and I start my first full-time marketing role. With it comes the realisation that I have a good theoretical marketing background but I lack many of the key practical skills required on the job:

  • I don’t know what a marketing professional does on a daily basis. I’m surprised by the different hats I have to wear as a Marketing Executive.

  • I find email marketing, Google advertising and event management intimidating. I don’t know where to start.

  • I’m not familiar with the software tools I need to use (i.e. content management and design software).

  • I’m used to writing essays but not email and ad copy (a completely different set of skills are required for those).

I got there in the end (took me a few years) but the process was rather painful.

truth be told …

… many employers hesitate to hire fresh graduates because of their lack of experience and the intense on-the-job training required. Companies know that the more training they need to provide, the higher the cost (time and money) they’ll have incur.

Arm your students with practical, actionable marketing knowledge to prepare them for the job market and make them more employable.
