Career Transitions, Job Hunting and Ageism in Marketing

Don’t just think about: I did these things at my job. Think about how those things that you did set you apart, make you relevant for the position that you are looking to get hired for.”

….

Marketers are their best selves when they believe in and love the product they’re marketing. And if you don’t, it is hard to really get excited about your role. ”

Lauren Berkemeyer, Chief Marketing Officer at YuLife, Ex-Dow Jones, WSJ Marketer

about LaUREN

Lauren’s marketing career began as the producer of a comedy variety show on Broadway. The adrenaline of each successful performance fuelled Lauren’s romance with marketing: driving attendance of Fortune Magazine’s global conferences, joining a luxury design magazine start-up, and subsequently accelerating global advertising growth for Metro newspaper, The Wall Street Journal and Future Publishing.

Lauren joined YuLife as the company’s Chief Marketing Officer and their common goal is to disrupt the group risk insurance market by changing how people value and use insurance.

KEY Take-AWAYS from this episode

  • Career transitions: playing into your strengths and choosing the environment that you thrive in. Position yourself as the perfect candidate for the new industry you wish to transition into (not the one you want to leave behind).

  • As a marketer, it’s important to feel connected to the product, what it stands for and what it delivers in order to drive excitement around it.

  • Lauren envisages a future that will include data-centric operational marketers and those with creative energy. AI and technology tools in general work as well as the inputs into them. Lauren believes that the main marketing roles will not go anywhere and the need for creativity is here to stay.

  • Ageism in marketing: it’s industry specific and likely more of a phenomenon on the [marketing] agency front because there are fewer senior positions available in an agency, Lauren explains. You need to get upskilled regularly, understand how the new tools work, hire to complement your weaknesses. Lead by example to remain competitive in the ever-evolving marketing realm. Marketing is changing everyday. Don’t stay stuck in the past.
