Marketing the Freelancer - The Business or The Person? Part 1.
The first main decision you will face as you transition into freelancing is how you will market your services.
There are two main choices: to create a company brand [New Marketing Agency Name] or you become the brand [Insert Own Name].
One of my mentees was recently confronted with this dilemma which was keeping her in stuck mode. She was trying to decide which option was best.
In this impromptu and non-exhaustive episode (which felt like recording a voice message for all of you out there pondering this decision) - I outline a few things to consider.
1) Personal branding or being the face of the business (hint: it’s not for everyone)
2) The downside of relying on your personal brand to build your business
3) The main advantage of leveraging your personal brand for business purposes
4) The main advantage of building a company brand and separating it from you
5) The importance of building a genuine connection with your audience (think followers, prospects, collaborators) whichever option you choose.
There will be a part two as there is more I’d like to share on this topic.
Spoiler alert: there is no right or wrong choice. The best route for you depends on your preferences, personality, circumstances and experience.
Many thanks to L who inspired this episode (you’re a star and I can’t wait to see the business you’ll build :)
Onwards and upwards!
